46 Helpful Communication Hints for the Caregiver of Those with Alzheimer's 1. Use concrete, literal, positive phrases 2. Give one step instructions 3. Always use a calm voice 4. Limit options – too many choices can overwhelm 5. Ask one question at a time and WAIT for an answer 6. Validate their feelings about losses or frustrations 7. Limit wording – too many words are confusing 8. Make your verbal and non-verbal messages the same 9. Move slowly – sudden movements may frighten them 10. Stand or sit in front of the person and make eye contact before speaking 11. Use gestures and movements to supplement your point 12. Make tasks fun – use singing, joking, or silliness 13. Allow the person to say "no", then re-approach later 14. Ask for help. If you are tired and stressed the person will feel this and react negatively 15. Don't stop trying!
