81 See our listing on page 80. IS HOSPICE A PLACE? Hospice is a program, not a place. Hospice care is usually provided in the comfort of an individual's home but can also be provided in any environment in which a person lives, including a nursing home, assisted living facility or residential care facility. IS HOSPICE ONLY FOR CANCER PATIENTS? Hospice can be utilized with end-stage organ disease or with end-stage neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's, dementia or stroke. We also care for patients who have congestive heart failure, chronic lung disease or other conditions. WHEN SHOULD A DECISION ABOUT ENTERING A HOSPICE PROGRAM BE MADE, AND WHO SHOULD MAKE IT? Any time during a life-limiting illness is an appropriate time to discuss care options, including hospice. By law, the decision belongs to the patient. Understandably, many people are uncomfortable with the idea of stopping an aggressive effort to "beat" a disease. Altus Hospice staff members are highly sensitive to these concerns and are always available to discuss them with the patient, family and physician.
