TYPES OF SENIOR LIVING AND CARE The following are definitions of the types of Senior Living and Care found in New LifeStyles. Sections are color-coded for easy reference on the index. n INDEPENDENT LIVING Independent living communities with amenities such as meals, transpor tation and activities usually included in a monthly fee. n CONTINUING CARE RETIREMENT COMMUNITY CCRCs combine independent living, assisted living and nursing in a single setting. Normally requiring an entry fee, offering a living unit, meals, and health care, up to the nursing level. n ACTIVE ADULT COMMUNITY Usually offer a choice of spacious homes rather than apart ments, often with a clubhouse in which a variety of activities are planned for residents. Monthly fees may cover services such as housekeeping and maintenance, but meals are usually not included. n PRODUCTS & SERVICES Financial, health-related and other valuable products and services designed to meet the varying needs of mature adults. n ASSISTED LIVING A combination of housing, personalized supportive services and health care, designed to meet the needs of those needing help with the activities of daily living. n DAY CARE Various programs provide a range of geriatric day services, including social, nutrition, nursing, and rehab. n MEMORY CARE Communities offering specialized programs for residents suffering from Alzheimer's disease or other forms of memory loss. These programs can be offered by Residential, Assisted Living or Nursing Centers. n NURSING/REHAB Centers licensed to provide health care and services involved in managing complex and potentially serious medical problems. n SUB-ACUTE Centers licensed to provide care that falls between acute care and traditional skilled nursing home care, usually after or instead of hospitalization. n HOME CARE Includes providers of licensed health care services in the home, hospital or residential facility and companies that provide non-medical assistance. n CARE MANAGEMENT Offer services addressing a wide range of senior issues, such as selecting a senior residence, choosing in-home care providers, and various financial options. Typically care managers evaluate a senior's situation and financial needs and then provide a recommended care plan. n SITTER SERVICE Services of sitters, aides or private duty nurses or therapists in the home, hospital or residential community. May include personal care assistance. n PERSONAL ASSISTANCE SERVICES Agencies that provide home care aides, companion care, homemaker services and may provide nursing services in the client's place of residence. n HOSPICE/PALLIATIVE CARE Hospice & Palliative Care focus on providing comfort. Services can include pain management and a variety of emotional, spiritual and physical support. Care can be provided in the home or a senior community. 8
