March 10 Olivia Mainville and the Aquatic Troupe 7:00 p.m. Presented by Tri-Lakes Center for the Arts. e Aquatic Troupe has been described as stepping into a time machine. Whether they bring you back to a 1920's swingy jazz and ragtime party or whether they fast forward to a modern and slightly futuristic soundscape that'll make you feel, each song is comprised of a vast amount of layers and a differ- ent emotion from each melody. If David Bowie, Beirut and Danny Elfman's music had a baby, they would sound something like Olivia Mainville and the Aquatic Troupe. Paul Hindemith's operatic tribute to the medieval painter Matthias Grünewald contains a story within a story. First performed in Berlin in 1934, the piece was labeled "degener- ate" by the Nazi government — perhaps because the plot centers on the painter's resolve to serve art above politics. Its turbulent themes and orchestration make this one of the most complex pieces in the classical repertoire.$21 and up.
