The attraction to seniors of this type of living includes: x Comfort, convenience, and flexibility x Safety and security x Social, spiritual, and recreational en- gagement x Healthier eating with flexible meal plans and self-catering options x Access to care services and assistance with activities of daily living x Peace of mind for both the senior and their family The resulting benefits for seniors are that they are able to remain independent, engaged, and vital much longer. Their physical health often remains stronger due to healthier eating and an active lifestyle. They maintain better cognitive skills through social interaction and mental stimulus, both leading to increased quality and longevity of life. BCSLA launched the Seal of Approval Program in February 2010 and in 2014 is continuing to complete the 2nd and 3rd re-assessments on the 83 retirement communities that have been awarded with this designation. To obtain the Seal of Approval, the senior retirement community must complete both an internal self-assessment and an independent external review. Successful communities meet multiple criteria in five areas: safety measures, infection control, staff training, resident services, and assisted living supports. Within these five areas there are a total of 79 check items that require policies, procedures and detailed documentation to ensure the quality and standards are met. The assessor meets not only with the managers of the community but also with the staff and the senior residents that live there. To prepare for assessment day the community involves all departments and ensures all 79 areas are reviewed and made ready for the assessor. BCSLA members take pride in voluntarily completing this self regulating process to ensure their communities are operating at the highest standards. Residents and their families can take comfort in knowing that leadership and commitment of excellence is being pledged by the community when they are awarded the BCSLA Seal of Approval designation. This program is clearly designed for the safety, security and well being of residents living in BCSLA member retirement communities.
