Use concrete, literal, positive phrases Give one step instructions Always use a calm voice Limit options – too many choices can overwhelm Ask one question at a time and WAIT for an answer Validate their feelings about losses or frustrations Limit wording – too many words are confusing Make your verbal and non-verbal messages the same Move slowly – sudden movements may frighten them Stand or sit in front of the person and make eye contact before speaking Use gestures and movements to supplement your point Make tasks fun – use singing, joking, or silliness Allow the person to say "no", then re-approach later Ask for help.
